/sensing the pulse of the party
//story
Every party you go to has it’s own energy and feel, depending on the people, the music and the setting. We created Pulse as a commission for Absolut's series of events in nightclubs across Canada, Absolut Nights. We wanted to tap into the visceral excitement of these events and turn that energy into a visual display that could show an event's perceptible verve.
Pulse takes the “pulse” of a party and creates a cumulative light show that shines through an array of 31 empty Absolut bottles, allowing people to see their own heartbeat translated to light patterns.When someone puts their index finger on the sensor in the centre of the sculpture, the piece picks up their pulse and all of the bottles glow to the rhythm of their heartbeat in a vibrant red hue. However, when they leave, that heartbeat will light up on just one of the bottles, where it is kept stored.
If no one is interacting with Pulse, you see all of the bottles lighting up in a stunning deep blue pattern that seems to be random. In fact, what you see is all of the stored heartbeats of the most recent people who have interacted with the piece.//how it works
Pulse is made of a translucent 3D-printed core that holds 31 empty
Absolut bottles, each one with its own controllable light source. A pulse sensor captures a person's pulse and sends that info to an individual bottle. As the piece fills up with “heartbeats,” older heartbeats are replaced with the latest interactions.
